It would be a while yet until the name of the seafaring Visalians came upon Mia with unexpected force.
Chapter 7: Bel Shakes the Lionâs Tail
âI wasnât aware there was a place like this in Saint-Noel.â Mia looked around the aged hallway, groaning when she saw the hole in the wall. âIs the entrance always revealed like this?â Mia looked at Rafina, who averted her eyes.
âRight, yes. Usually...thereâs a picture that covers the entrance.â
âYes! It was a beautiful portrâpicture, AunâMiss Rafna,â said Bel, oddly muddling her words.
âAh! So it was hidden by a picture. It must be big to hide a hole like this.â
âIt was,â replied Bel. She glanced at Rafina before adding, âIt was a picture of a beautiful angel!â with an expression brimming with smugness.
Oho! Sheâs trying to curry favor with Miss Rafina, thought Mia. âMy, I see! In that case, I would love to take a...â peek, Mia tried to say to curry favor just the same. But she was interrupted by a grinning Rafina.
âItâs quite crude in its craft. Right, Bel? Isnât it?â she asked, clearly not willing to take ânoâ for an answer. Mia sensed overwhelming power behind her innocent smile.
This...is the same face she made when she couldn't remember my name! Miaâs instincts were telling her to stay away from this topic, and so, she closed her mouth. But there was someone who didnât.
âOh...yes! Thatâs right! The picture wasnât anything special. Um... Oh!â Bel clapped her hands. âIt was actually terribly embarrassing!â
Rafina clasped her hand to her chest and groaned as if those words were a blade wedged into her chest. She looked to be on the verge of collapse. Mia was assaulted by a vision of her granddaughter grabbing the tail of the tamed lion and shaking it as hard as she could.
Is it really okay to let Bel talk like this? Though I am curious about this picture, if itâs so embarrassing.
Despite her curiosity, Mia resolved to not dig any further. Curiosity killed the princess, after all. There were subjects in this world that were best to avoid, such as The Book of Those who Crawl the Earth, but anyway...
âU-Usually, guards are stationed here, but we left the post empty that day as we werenât sure what Juliusâs next move would be,â said Rafina with tears in her eyes.
âI see... Should he have been cornered and lashed out, students may have been injured. You decided to lure him here for capture instead, then.â
The man himself, Julius, gave a composed nod. âSo that was your reasoning for teaching me of my motherâs location. You had your suspicions of me, and thus attempted to lure me out.â
âNot to borrow the logic of the Serpents, but it is easier to deceive your opponents when the lies are mixed with truths. Plus, thereâs nothing better than using truth alone to trap your foes. We can use our heads too.â
âI see I underestimated you,â said Julius with a smile.
âOh dear, what a crowd youâve brought.â Suddenly, an eerie voice reverberated through the room.
